As a journalist and @HowardAlumni of the Hilltop Newspaper, I know when and where to pick my soapbox moments…
The cynic in me doesn’t believe 100% of the challenges are donating 100% of the time. Not to mention, in this country of excess, I refuse to waste perfectly good ice and water when there are people in my city who don’t have access to the daily required 8 cups of water (do I even need to bring up those around the globe without a viable source of fresh water?)
So I decided to take it one step further: I calculated the amount of water/money I’d use to fill up my selected #icebucketchallenge bucket.
Is my donation going to significantly impact the research for ALS? Nope. Am I trying to change people’s actions? That’s would be nice; however, it’s not realistic. Let’s be honest, people are going to do what they do for the sake of being part of any social media trend. I vehemently was going to refuse an invitation to participate, but since my alum called me out this is the only way I know to do it.
